Valentine’s Day feedback: you said, we did

You may remember back in February, we had a stand in the Billy B asking you “Tell us how you feel this Valentine’s Day.” You could write a note to us to tell us about something we’re doing that you love, or if you would like us to make some changes.

We loved hearing from everyone and got some great feedback from the people we spoke to; with both things you really like and things you want us to improve. We’ve gone through all the feedback and just wanted to share a brief update with where we’re up to with addressing some of the improvements.

Define, develop and deliver

At Durham, we’re lucky to be part of the Academic Libraries North (ALN) community and often join their sessions and workshops, especially within the User Experience (UX) Community of Practice (CoP) that we are members of. The ALN UX CoP allows groups of people from different institutions to get together (usually virtually) and discuss different User Experience methodologies, projects, and chat about what each library is currently doing or planning for the future. There are a variety of sessions, from workshops to ‘UX in one hour’ presentations, allowing members to expand their knowledge and encourage others to try out new techniques.

Welcome week and ongoing support

From Wednesday 2nd to Tuesday 8th of October, Bill Bryson Library hosted our ‘Welcome Fair’. Coming to into a Library the size and scale of the Billy B or the first time can be a bit of a daunting experience for many, so we wanted to offer a friendly and approachable hello! We also looked to make our students (both new and existing!) feel welcome in our spaces by promoting awareness and encouraging engagement with everything we have to offer across all of Library and Collections. Plus, we wanted our users to know that we are here to support them all throughout their time at Durham.

Conference season!

Over the summer, several colleagues have had chance to attend conferences on a number of different themes/topics.

Conference: Business Librarian’s Association Summer Conference, University of Northampton, 26th-28th June

Ben Taylorson, Faculty Librarian: It’s not as straightforward to get to Northampton as you might expect, but a mere 4 trains and 5 hours after leaving the house I had made it. Before the conference began, I was afforded the opportunity to have a look around the town and a wander over to the football ground, before making my way to the Waterside Campus. This is a collection of buildings overlooking the canal and a nearby park, which is lovely. The overpowering smell from the nearby Carlsberg brewery – not so much.

Welcome to Durham University Things To Do!

Earlier this year, after many months of planning and preparation, we launched our new Things To Do website! After undergoing a bit of a revamp, we wanted our new website to provide information about all our wonderful venues, research and learning and engagement, all in one place!

Our museums, collections and venues welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and are home to more than 100,000 objects from over 60 countries worldwide. Our new website was developed to showcase each of our venues and to make it easy to plan your visit to our sites.

We want to help to support you as much as we can, and so we’ve highlighted a number of services and initiatives that we already have in place, which we hope will help in the current financial situation.

These are available to all Durham staff and students, giving you free access to some of our amazing resources.

‘Rockin’ around the Christmas (Wish) Tree…’

If you visited the Billy B last December or follow us on social media, you’ll have seen our lovely Christmas Tree opposite the Help and Information Desk, adorned with all the festive decorations you could want – twinkling lights, sparkling tinsel, beautiful baubles, and – the ultimate decoration for us – hand-made craft bees. 🐝

You’ll also have seen our very special gift tags hanging delicately from the branches, handwritten with wishes for items to be donated to local charities to help someone in need.

Delightful dogs visit the Billy B

Promoting student wellbeing is always high on the agenda for us (see previous blog about self-care and wellbeing 😊). Particularly during Easter term, where pressures, anxieties and stress levels increase for many, thanks to the impending exam and assessment period. Planning study time, revision, getting enough sleep, eating well, taking breaks – all massively important but we know that sometimes, it can feel quite overwhelming to fit everything in.

To try and help with this, we’ve developed a schedule of wellbeing events and activities throughout May, kicking off with a visit last Wednesday during Deaf Awareness Week from the wonderful Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Don’t judge a book by its cover – go on a Blind Date with a Book

Trying to find a new book to read isn’t always as straightforward as it seems. Of course, you can easily take to the internet, searching for leisure title inspo, but inevitably you find yourself getting lost in the long lists of recommendations online. You spend all your time trawling through the titles, debating between this one and that one before realising the spare time you once had has now slipped away, resulting in you making your own list of ‘books to read when I find the time.’ Ironic, don’t you think? (Alanis Morissette classic – couldn’t resist!)
