Item of the month: Ye Peakrel, a Winster Christmas hodgepodge, 1878

As Christmas is fast approaching, this month’s item shows how a family in 1878 brought some festive cheer to those around them. This is a humorous newsletter “Imprinted at Winster Hall, in the County of Derbyshire, at the private press of Llwellynn Jewitt, F.S.A”, sold for the princely sum of “Nowt!” for private distribution. The newsletter states that only 25 copies were printed so perhaps these were to amuse friends, family or neighbours in the Christmas season.

‘Rockin’ around the Christmas (Wish) Tree…’

If you visited the Billy B last December or follow us on social media, you’ll have seen our lovely Christmas Tree opposite the Help and Information Desk, adorned with all the festive decorations you could want – twinkling lights, sparkling tinsel, beautiful baubles, and – the ultimate decoration for us – hand-made craft bees. 🐝

You’ll also have seen our very special gift tags hanging delicately from the branches, handwritten with wishes for items to be donated to local charities to help someone in need.

12 Activities of Christmas: Library Staff Challenge

As we lead up to Christmas, we’ve given over this post to Sarah Hyland and Katie Skellett, who have been forcefully injecting Christmas cheer across Library and Collections staff, who have worked hard across 2020 to get services up and running, buildings back open and reading materials available online.

“We probably don’t need to say this but what a year it has been! Normally we would be decorating the offices and you wouldn’t be able to see people or books for tinsel and Christmas trees.  We would also be having staff parties, Christmas cracker relays and sharing delicious Christmas treats that the bakers amongst us had whipped up.  This year is obviously a bit different but the University Library and Collections Staff Development Group still wanted to try to do something to bring colleagues together.  We wanted to share a bit of Christmas cheer and help to make people feel festive – wherever they are just now.  So, we came up with the “12 activities of Christmas”.  It started on Monday 30th November and ran until Tuesday 15th December – culminating in a virtual Christmas quiz party!”

Christmas Cracker relay!

Batons at the ready!

The library has had a staff running group for a couple of years now, meeting a couple of times a week to head out and remind themselves just how flat Durham isn’t. It’s a good way to get a bit of exercise in an encouraging environment whilst having a bit of a natter.

In addition to the regular biweekly jaunts, the group has turned out en masse in 2019 to conquer the Sunderland City 5k and Durham 5/10k. So, what better way to celebrate the upcoming festive period than with the 2nd Annual Library Christmas Cracker Relay!

Christmas Wish Tree

Christmas has arrived! Well, actually it hasn’t – there’s still 3 more weeks to go. But you’d never know that, given the number of Christmas trees that have sprung up over the last few days. From where I am sat in the Bill Bryson Library shared office I can count seven that have appeared on the desks of various colleagues in the last few days! SEVEN!
