Rob Harrison

Please state your name, full job title, and a brief description of what your job entails:

Rob Harrison – Assistant Customer Services Manager specialising in Visitor Attractions. My role is to oversee and manage the visitor sites that we have within Durham University – including the Palace Green Library, Oriental Museum, and Durham Castle. Ensuring that all visitors are having the best experience they can throughout their visit, also dealing with any hiccups along the way.

How long have you worked in the library/ULC?

I’m relatively new only starting in May 2024. I’m also new to the University Sector – I’m finding it very interesting and exciting.

What would you say is the most interesting/enjoyable aspect of your job?

Having to work between several different sites on a daily basis, especially with some being on a World Heritage Site. Being able to walk up to the Palace Green, seeing both the Durham Castle and Cathedral is an honour before starting work.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

Travelling and holidays – if not on one, then planning for the next! Cruises are a particular favourite.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Feel the fear and do it anyway, otherwise you’ll never find out – you can only ever learn.

What song always gets you on the dance floor/to the karaoke machine?

The one song that will always have me dancing is Baggy Trouser by Madness – an absolute classic.

Which part of the world would you love to visit and why?

Japan – I’ve been wanting to travel there for years and wanting to experience the culture. I’m also always keeping an eye out for cruises.
